The Story

The nothing rather than something question is one of my favorites. It reaches that existential consideration about the nature of reality, the WHY of being, and how? Created by an all powerful supreme being? Spontaneous quantum fluctuation? Simulation by a type IV civilization? We'll never know IMO. Well, I'll never know anyway but I had fun asking this question. One lady found it scary. Almost everyone had to think about it. This one was probably repeated back to me the most often, making sure they heard it right. An Australian physics professor went into lecture mode to explain how it isn't possible for there to be nothing instead of something what with vacuum energy, quantum fluctuations, yada, yada, yada. The other question is something I've wondered about for a long time, given my own personal history of moving frequently while growing up. Not that I've wondered about the percentages of movers versus non-movers, but more like how does it affect a person's individuation process if you stay in one place and are able to develop long term relationships with people and place more easily than if you move from town to town, or in my case state to state (I went to seven different schools in three different states during my formative years). This was a good conversation opener since it gave people an opportunity to talk about their personal history and the effects of stability or lack thereof.

What I Found

I got more positive feedback about these questions than from preivious events. Maybe I had honed my skills about making the approach and choosing candidates. Maybe the questions struck a chord better, who knows? Maybe it was the timing. At one point, while tripping, I decided that for everything, all the time, it's all in the timing. One of those ideas that captivates you at three in the morning, and you write it down because it so perfectly encapsulates the meaning of lived experience. Then in the morning you read it and go, well, I was pretty high at the time, which reactivates the experience. Yes, yes, it's ALL in the timing.
